You arrived in the middle of a warzone. A group of humans was clashing against a massive pack of plagued citizens, including the deadly Screamers that you had the pleasure of meeting moments ago and other strange mutations.
The humans seem to have some power over their enemies: the citizens sometimes scream in pain when their blades strike them, something none of your party was able to accomplish no matter how grievous your blows. Fire is another weapon wielded here, and you even cstch a couple people shooting flame from their hands, hinting at some magic. Even so, the battle is not going well for the humans. They are greatly outnumbered by their foes and slowly they begin to give against the tide.
You stand and watch all this in a sort of daze until behind you there is a cry of mirth.
"Thank the gods, reinforcements!"
It is a woman with blonde hair squatting behind you. In front of her is a control panel attached to the portal you have just stepped through.
"I've been trying to raise headquarters for an hour. How is the outer assault going? When are the others coming through?"
You simply stare blankly at her. A second later something flies past her face. She screams and you see, in horror, that her nose has been ripped off. Blood gushes down over her face as she collapses in shock on top of the controls. The portal begins to spin wildly.
"Get down!" shouts another voice. You think at first this is a warning against the portal, but the next instant a man throws himself on top of you, diving behind the machine for cover from... from what?
Then you catch sight of the object that took off the girl's face. It looks like a large sharpeneed bone covered in red mucus. It is digging into the ground nearby and something is happening to it. The bone is cracking.
There is a sudden explosion as the bone splinters, throwing pieces into nearby men and women. Chunks of it embed themselves in the girl at the control panel. She barely has time to meet your eyes before she is dead. More explosions sound all over the room and you hear more screams.
"Stay down, and stay still," the man hisses in your ear.
With your face down you can only hear the resulting commotion: the sound of a stampede filled with screeches and hissing and growling. Presently the room falls silent, and your saviour lets you up. The room is now empty except for the bodies of the slain and the remains of the battle. The man walks over to the dead woman at the control booth and stares at her for a moment. Then he looks at you and grimaces.
"My wife," he explains. "Huh, I thought I'd care more."
He takes something out of her pack.
"You know the drill," he says. "Loot, and then we move on. I'm not waiting around to see these poor bastards rise."
