If you roll mental or skill for the portal, you can't take any other actions in the round. Along with that, you can't roll skill and mental in the same round. HOWEVER! If someone ELSE is in the room with you, even Gertwiller, they can roll skill while you roll mental. DC lowering takes place immediately.

D'oh!
COMBAT roll (4 dice, DC 13) barricading windows (4d20.hits(13)=1)
SKILL roll (1 + 2 [Gertwiller] = 3 dice) to see how good the barricades are (1d20=18, 1d20=5, 1d20=17)
I guess I'll barricade the window between the back door and the basement stairs. At least it's a good one. There's no point in spending Stress to block off additional windows if I can't get all of them, and there's no way I'm taking 5 Stress to get them all. If Owain had listened to me and focused on barricading, we could have done it between us.
EDIT: Since Owain was initially helping with the barricade, can he contribute by taking Stress? If he takes 2 Stress and I take 3, we can barricade all of the windows and we'll both still be at The Brink. Better still, does he get to make a COMBAT roll?Aram has only just finished barricading the window on the rear wall, between the back door and the basement stairs. He is on his way to board up the window just around the corner from the stairs when the pounding begins. "Bring it!" he says, gripping his sword and shield.

I'll allow him to take stress, sure. No combat roll, though.

You're at the portal. I had finished my search (need an outcome there Zipp) and was en route to rejoin Aram and had sent Gert to help with the portal. Not sure if either of us actually reached our destinations.

My next post will make sense of all this madness and rolling and bring us back to good solid action.

Okay, we'll call this round 1, so you can post actions now.
Gertwiller had left Gregor in the process of tinkering about with a set of panels on the bottom of the portal machine. Inside were a number of heavy metals, strung together with crystals and other precious stones in a nest of wires. The set up was extremely complicated, but Gregor could tell that something had gone wrong. Some crystals had fallen free of their positions, others were half broken, bits and pieces ground to a fine dust on the floor of the panel. More disturbing, some of the wires had been cut with a serrated edge. Whatever had happened here had been deliberate. The machine had been sabotaged. No natural fault had caused this.
Down the hallway from the portal, Owain laid a hand on Gertwiller's shoulder.
"Go back and help Gregor," he said. "If we can't hold off these monsters, that portal will be our only avenue of escape."
Owain's voice held a certain degree of confidence. His search had gone well, after all.
See board, Owain.
Owain bounded up the stairs to find Aram standing with his head thrown back and his mouth in a wide grin.
"A glorious stand, eh brother?" Aram said to him. Owain didn't answer. He looked around the room.
Aram's efforts to board up the place had gone rather well. All but one of the windows was blocked. The second window closest to the basement stairs was unblocked, and Aram had placed himself there as a living blockade. Anything trying to come through that way would meet his blade.
The barricades were well set up, too. One large piece of furniture was set against each door or window, usually a dresser or cabinet, and then a smaller object (like a desk) was stacked against that for additional support. Some of the windows on the southern side were less well stacked (Aram had run out of furniture), and Aram knew that none of the barricades would hold long against a concentrated attack, but he had definitely bought them all some time.
Suddenly a dark shape passed in front of the window Aram was guarding. At the same time, they heard a window shatter behind the door that led to the spiral staircase. The next moment, the cabinet blocking the door shook.
Well, no zombies this round. Declare actions

The last order that was given to him was in Owain's post, where he OOC said Gertwiller could go work with Gregor. So I've assumed that Gertwiller spends this round with you. Anyone who wants to claim him for combat or other purposes will have to fit with you over it.

I have no objection to Gertwiller helping Gregor.
Whoops, I thought there were only six windows! I miscounted and didn't realize there were seven. I'll be chugging a Laumspur potion this round once Owain gives me one, and of course guarding the one open window. In that case, I'd rather the open window be the one just south of that one. I never wanted the window next to the basement stairs to be unblocked, and it was my intention in the post above to get that one second. Or Owain could put back the item he got by spending two Stress and spend one of those points getting the last window instead.
"Yes, go help Gregor," says Aram as Gertwiller departs down the stairs. "Just...don't turn your back on him." He nods to Owain. "We shall retreat downstairs once there are too many breaches to hold. We can drop sharp objects on the stairs behind us to soften them up, and the stairway and the hall beyond it are a narrow channel that will only allow a couple of them to attack at once. How did your search go? I hope you found some Laumspur. Alether would be useful too."

Gregor rolled up the sleeves on his robe and set to work. His first little fiddle of the device gave him some understanding of its workings. Standing back and thinking about it, he was pretty sure he could do this, given time. Unfortunately, time was something that was not on his side. He needed to concentrate...
Gert suddenly appeared through the doorway.
"Found anything?", he quizzed.
Gregor stood and though for another second.
"Yes, I think so. Ive seen something similar to this before, so I reckon between us we can get this working. You'll be my hands, if you will." Gregor finished speaking with a huge, very genuine grin. Gert looked at him, then moved towards the machine.
Gregor tried to explain the theory of the portal to Gert, however the other either stared bankly at him or ignored him while he tinkered with the various wires. Gregors ire rose as the man before him really didnt appear to be listening. They only had one shot, as some crystals were missing. They realinged what they could but the machince still failed to start. Gregor sighed despite himself, this was going to take a while....
