the original d30 character was more combat oriented He can afford to be if he's rolling d30s all the time! ;D

It's not a cheat, it's just smart gaming

A question about Sixth Sense: Is it "always on," or does it have to be actively used?

I think it's like Perception in the d20 game. If there is something there to know, you might reflexively get a twinge when something is actively about to happen, but it doesn't hurt to actively focus on something now and again.

Hmm. According to the mongoose rules, it looks like the Disciplines are only active when you choose to activate them. So, in this case, Sixth Sense would only work if you choose to use it.

So say those with it choose to use it "all the time", how would that work?
Also, team, should we sort out some kind of marching order?

I reckon me and another kai of the ranger mold with some sixth sense goes up front, our two tanks take the sides, and our final ranger with sixth sense take the rear looking for trouble
Kai Pentagram Power!

I have Sixth Sense and a bow. Guess I'll take the rear position.
Edit: Actually, most of us have Sixth Sense and a bow! Raging Stallion has Sixth Sense and no bow, so I suppose he should be up front. I'll take one of the flanks instead.

So say those with it choose to use it "all the time", how would that work? Also, team, should we sort out some kind of marching order? There is nothing to say you can't. As a GM, though, I would probably tell you that it is draining to extend your senses like that all the time and thus you may have to pay some Endurance or something, or you can't use your other Disciplines at the same time. Hopefully Matt from Mongoose is watching this thread and can answer for us!

Oh, I better relax the level of entry needed! Before the password, I had set the anti-spammer 'no guest can view' level of entry, so he would need to register
Edit: There we go, if you know the password you can gain access to the board and post into it, even if you are a guest.

No worries. I had given Matt the password, no idea if he tried to get in or not!

I always thought Sixth Sense worked like Spider-Man's ability to sense danger, ie it was "on" all the time, and that the gamebooks only check if you have it to prevent players who don't from getting the same information. Of course, you could equally argue that Sixth Sense never worked unless Joe decided to let it work!

You could argue that in the gamebooks JD took it as read the player would always want to use Sixth Sense, so told the player when something would be found.
Sadly, the d20 rules do make it an active power. Even the reflexes and AC bonus state you can't be flat footed and need to know the danger you face. However, personally I would have assumed, like RB, that there would be a passive component to it. You get a warning right before something happens, and the active use of it allows a little more warning.
Ah well!
The new 4E rules apparently do this with Perception now, and allow for a passive skill check right before something happens aswell as of course a player invoking it actively

A passive check right before you walk into danger isn't a bad thing; maybe,, in gamebook terms, it might give you a bonus on a random number if you have suddenly been attacked or something, or are about to walk into a trap.
