Just incase I am trapped at work (in from early tomorrow) when you want to close off the chapter, here is a potential version of Meldorac's speech. Feel free to edit it to suit the actions.
Meldorac eyes the occupants of the room, giving an apparently cool gaze to each in turn, allowing those new to the room to hear second hand the fact that Meldorac has some form of confession.
"Some of you," says Meldorac pointedly, barely disguising a disgusted look to Bonnie, "have asked exactly which guild I am from. What I will say next is something none from my order has ever admitted, but these seem exceptional times. I serve the king in a unique way, as many of my order have, ensuring the internal security of Sommerlund. That is as much as I will divulge, and though it may not seem much know that if any of you are false then even admitting this fact may have put many who I hold as brothers in danger."
Meldorac pauses, as if collecting his thoughts. "The matter I was assigned to was to investigate an artifact that the elders of Oasis hold. After the war, it was believed that a relic they possessed had some power of protection. A gift of Ishir and Kai that blessed that town from destruction.
"Origanally, we believed this 'plague' may have been the only means that the Darklanders had found to attack Oasis. That the Darklanders may seek to destroy this relic before its full powers of protection were obtained by those more magnaminous in its use than the town elders.
"However, the last report we received, the one that has sent myself to Oasis, is a fact a source in the town reported before becoming silent. A head priest there, in some odd act, has taken this relic and held it himself 'to protect it and the town.'
"My mission - our mission - is clear. We must find this relic, and discover if it is infact an evil trick. Is it causing the plague? Has this priest succumbed to the madness it might be generating, our biggest obstacle in eliminating this threat? Or is the relic Sommerlund's only hope of lasting peace against the Darklands threat, and something external is threatening its safety even now?
"The fact Darklanders roam abroad so brazenly show this area is no longer protected. Is this because such protection was always false, or is it because something is happening in Oasis? We must know! And we must know swiftly one way or the other! We took the long road for 'security' against the darklands and look at the tragedy that has already befallen us. I strongly urge us to carry on now, to the limits of our endurance if necessary, to secure this relic or destroy it!"
Meldorac looks imploringly around the room. apparently nervous at having shared such secure information yet also disdainful of the occupants of the room. Because, of course, they are either fools who do not know all that goes on in their own realm, or because they are false and have aligned themselves with the enemies of Sommerlund.
"So I ask Sherri again the only questions that matters in this time - where is the largest temple in Oasis, and does the high priest have a personal residence he may well be holed up in?"
That's it! That's his shot! If people believe him, then he can shake off those going to some temple while he goes after the Finger in the town hall. If anyone (like Owain) asks about the merchants' guilds, then Meldorac will dismiss them as scattered and fragmented groups of fools, but will know he has someone to eliminate!
And if Bonnie tries to push about what 'order' exactly Meldorac belongs to, Meldorac will be as arrogant and dismissive as possible, pointing out that she is an idiot - that she would not put up with some moron pointing out the positions of every Border Ranger to the Darklanders, so why is she being so foolish as to ask information that is even more vital to national security.
Anyway, that's it!
Meldorac may well also
