The morning dawned too early for most. The events of the night before had been unexpected, to say the least. Most had not found their sleep to be particularly restful.
Coming down into the main room, the companions found no trace of the innkeep. He apparently wanted nothing more to do with the ill-fortuned travelers. He had, however, packed them supplies in the form of rations and water canteens, enough to last them the roughly four day journey to Oasis.
Those who had been hoping that the missing companion would arrive by the morrow were disappointed: it was still just the five of them. They didn't have time to wait, though. Making their way outside with the supplies provided them, they saddled up their horses and prepared to get on the road before the streets became crowded with people.
Coming around to the front of the inn, they found the mercenary waiting for them on a horse of his own. He yawned and waved them a friendly greeting.
"The damn guard had me up half the night answering questions. Finally satisfied their curiosity, though, and all's well and good. Wouldn't try coming here any time soon, though. Doubt me if the innkeep will be inclined towards the friendly side of things."
He rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "Now it seems to me I remember something about you folks going towards the Wildlands. And seeing as how you've been sent by the king himself, I think me you're investigating the plague down that ways."
"Now, me, I came this way looking for a hire. Heard some rumours about war brewing near the Darklands. But let me tell you, I'd rather not fight Darkspawn if I didn't have to. Now, I figure you could use another sword, yeah? And I've just come from the Wildlands, and I've seen this plague you're after. I could prove a valuable resource... for the right price."
With this last word, he smiles widely, revealing a couple missing teeth.
As I said earlier, money isn't an issue in this campaign. You can assume that between you all you can pay the mercenary his fee. So the question is whether your character would want him on the team (or want to pay for a mercenary). In this case, we'll say majority wins out, so I'll let you all deliberate.
The mercenary is an ally. Allies are a little different in this game than most in that they are NPCs that are mostly controlled by the players instead of me. If you decide to take him, he can help you by taking damage or by using his special abilities. I'll explain more if you decide to take him on.
As far as the horses go, if you had your own steed, feel free to play as such. Otherwise you were given a steed on loan from your guild. The rations packed by the innkeeper can be kept in your saddlebags without a need to keep them in your inventory. If you do wish to carry any rations or water canteens on your person, they take up one slot each. Each saddlebag contains four rations and one water canteen.
