As soon as you open your mind to the psychic energies of the surrounding spirits, you sense an intense anger. The anger increases as you try to communicate with the spirits. Suddenly you realize you are in very real danger of being mentally and spritually injured by the energies of the Whispering Souls.
We're now in psychic combat. This will work like regular combat, only it uses Mental dice instead of Combat dice. The enemy has 5 life and uses three dice. Beating them will break the power of the cell. You can also use your Cener abilities here, and maybe end combat quicker.

So the base damage in psychic combat is 1, as no weapons are involved? That will make this battle drawn-out and painful. Can TOUGHNESS still be used to soak damage?
While I'm opposed to The Descent on general principles, I'm also opposed to getting my butt kicked - which is probably what will happen if I go up against them with two dice against three. Even if I win, I'll almost certainly be badly hurt. How can my Cener abilities be used to defeat them? Is it an automatic victory, or do they give me some kind of advantage?

Yes, base psychic damage is one, but toughness can't soak.
As for Cener Abilties, we kind've come up with them on the spot. You can basically do ANYTHING, it's just that the cost becomes higher, and sometimes the effects are limited by your current infection level (right now it's 9, essentially level 1 infection, almost level 2). So what do you want to do?

Since it's psychic combat, can MENTAL at least soak damage?
Could my abilities be used to temporarily disable the Whispering Souls, say long enough for me to escape from the cell? If not, how many extra MENTAL dice could they give me for the duration of the combat? Does being close to level 2 infection help me any, or is having 9 infection no better than having 1? Can infection be spent to enhance my abilities?

I'd be fine with letting you escape the cell via the use of your powers to stun the enemy. How about this... engage in usual psychic combat. If you get a successful hit (AKA damage), you can use stress to stun the enemy and escape the cell. The cost is 10-your current infection level. You can also spend infection to allow you to roll dice to prevent damage, at the cost of 1 infection point per dice.

Okay, sounds good to me! So that's 1 Stress at my current infection level. Here goes...
MENTAL roll (2 dice) in psychic combat with the Whispering Souls (1d20=10, 1d20=18)
I'll play 10+18=28 and hope for the best. When the spirits of the dead assail his mind, Aram responds the only way he knows how - with devastating force. Though he cannot harm them in the conventional way, he strikes with all of the force of his mind, backed by the magic of the Ceners that flows through his veins. He does not need to destroy them, merely to distract them long enough to disrupt their power and escape from the cell.

Aram, despite his skills in the area of disguise and subterfuge, was actually a believer in the simple approaches to problem solving. His belief was that if he could be stronger than anyone else, than he wouldn't have to rely on working hard or being clever to escape situations. He would just over-power them. So though the Whispering Souls represented a very real threat to his sanity, he didn't try to defend against their attack... he simply sent a stronger one at them. Whispering Souls: 19, 20, 3
Nice play! Well, you've gotten your hit off. If you spend that threat, you can stun the souls and escape through the door.

Thanks! And especially thanks for not leading with a 39 - I would have had no defense against that! Threat spent.
Oh, and gibber. Wubble.
Aram uses his limited knowledge of the Death spiral to channel his mental energies into stunning the Whispering Souls temporarily, though their attack has taken a toll on his mind. When he feels them go dormant, he flings open the cell door and flees into the hall while he can. Then he retrieves his torch and hurries off in the direction he saw Robert Mason leave. If he's quick about it, maybe he can still catch up to him.

Before you can get far, you have a strange sensation in your head. It feels like there's someone whispering to you. The voice sounds vaguely familiar, though you can't place it, surprised as you are to recognize an entirely foreign voice speaking from within your own thoughts.
The gist of the foreign thought seems to be: "You fool, where do you think you're going? Don't you know you have to leave the same way you came in?"

Aram stops in his tracks and looks behind him. No, I did not know that, he thinks. Why do I have to leave the same way I came in? And who are you?

"Going this way only leads further into the prison!" the voice says again. "If we go back the way we came, there should be an exit. Forget about that other fool, he'll never find his way out of here."
When you ask who the voice belongs to, it growls at you, but then quickly stiffles the show of anger.
"I'm a helper, what else do you need to know? Get us out of here or rot with me forever in the dungeon. Your decision."

Aram nods as he runs back the way he had come. He does not fully trust the voice in his head, but he knows it wants to get out of this place just as much as he does - perhaps more. I know you're one of the Whispering Souls, he thinks. The smartest of the bunch, as you have escaped while the others are still trapped. That was very clever of you to stow away in my mind.

The voice stays silent for a moment after your accusation, then you experience the voice's laugh for the first time. You don't really hear it. It's more like someone is laughing inside your body. It's an internal shiver, like the shaking of a laugh without any of the sound or release. It's a wholly uncomfortable sensation.
"I suppose you've found me out, then," the voice says. "The name is Shaetano. We'll be together for quite a while, I think."
You are just reflecting on how this makes you feel when you reach the room where you first appeared. The hallway continues on, but you smell something foul coming from that direction.

Then it is good that we are starting to get along, thinks Aram, peering down the hall. My name is Aram. Would that we had met under better circumstances, but we must make do with things as they are. Is the way ahead the only way out? I smell something awful in that direction. Probably more of the walking dead. I hope you enjoy battle as much as I do, Shaetano. We're likely to see a lot of it.
